An international group of scientists discovered a new species of Pango tapanuliensis orangutans on the island of Sumatra. Previously, biologists believed that there is a single species of orangutans – Pongo abelii. But now it turned out that in the center of the island there is a small population of monkeys, which are anatomically and genetically different from the Sumatran Pongo abelii and the Kalimantan Pongo pygmaeus. The study is published in Current Biology, briefly reported in a press release from the University of Zurich. Check out our unique collection of photos!
